Its floor covers about 24 743 square metres, which makes it the largest casino floor in Africa and one of the largest in the world, and it carries roughly 274 slot machines and 12 tables covering blackjack, progressive blackjack, roulette and poker, with a Salon Privé area for Winners Circle members. Around the gaming there is a three-star Peermont Metcourt hotel with 70 rooms and suites, the Beef Baron grillhouse, the F.L.A.G. Café on the hotel's ground floor, the Moo Bar, the Escapades Theatre, five conference and function venues, a supervised Play Zone for small children, the Fantasia arcade and the Interlagos go-kart track for ages 12 and over. Where Rio Casino Resort sits, and why that matters
Klerksdorp is the largest town in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district of the North West and grew on the back of the gold reef that runs under Orkney and Stilfontein. Rio Casino Resort stands on the edge of it, at the corner of the N12 and Rio Boulevard in Meiringspark, which is the practical detail most visitors need: the property is a highway resort, roughly 170 km south-west of Johannesburg and about 45 km from Potchefstroom, and the drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria takes around two hours.
That location explains the scale of the place. It was built to pull traffic off a national road rather than to serve a single suburb, which is why the floor is so much larger than the town would suggest and why the property carries a hotel, a theatre and five function venues alongside the gaming. A Rio de Janeiro theme, and the numbers behind it
The resort opened in May 2002 as Tusk Rio Casino Resort and was bought by Peermont Global in August 2006, after which the Metcourt hotel and the convention centre were built on adjacent land. The design leans hard on a Rio de Janeiro carnival theme — the room names alone run Copacabana, Ipanema, Flamengo, Maracana and Samba — and the go-kart track is called Interlagos after the Brazilian circuit.
The headline number is floor area: about 24 743 square metres, or 266 330 square feet, which published rankings place as the largest casino floor on the African continent and inside the world's top ten. That figure covers the whole gaming and entertainment complex rather than the machine banks alone, so do not read it as a machine count — that is 274, with 12 tables, and it is set out on Live tables.
What the complex includes beyond the gaming floor
Accommodation on the property is the three-star Peermont Metcourt hotel: 70 rooms and suites, listed as 30 classic twin rooms, 20 classic king rooms, 9 superior twins, 6 superior kings, 4 executive suites and 1 room fitted for guests needing special assistance. Dining runs from the Beef Baron grillhouse, which seats about 60 and trades daily from 08:00 to 22:00, to the F.L.A.G. Café on the hotel's ground floor, seating about 94 and serving breakfast from 06:30 to 10:30, and the Moo Bar, open Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 02:00 and restricted to guests 18 and older.
Away from the gaming there is the Escapades Theatre for live shows, five conference and function venues — the Flamengo Room, the Maracana Room, the Samba Room, the Escapades Theatre itself and the Ipanema tent platform — the Play Zone supervised crèche, the Fantasia arcade and the Interlagos go-kart track for drivers aged 12 and over. Nobody under 18 may enter the gaming area itself; that is national law, not a house preference.
